Beyond checkout: The missing financial layer in the agent ecosystem
Blog post from Airwallex
Agent technology has advanced in reasoning, tool use, product discovery, and commerce orchestration, but financial execution remains a major constraint because agents often still require human intervention to authorize, move, and reconcile money. The passage frames agentic finance as five layers—observation, decision, authorization, execution, and reconciliation—and argues that current systems are strongest in the first two while struggling with the latter three, particularly in cross-border supplier payments, marketplace fund management, and machine-to-machine purchases. It contends that effective financial agents need delegated authority, tightly scoped permissions, programmable payment instruments, access to payment rails, failure handling, and audit-ready transaction records. While current agentic-commerce efforts have improved checkout and credential tokenization, they do not address the broader range of business and platform financial workflows. Airwallex positions its regulated financial infrastructure, including multi-currency accounts, wallets, cards, pay-ins, payouts, billing, and developer interfaces such as MCP, CLI, APIs, and GUIs, as a foundation for enabling governed, policy-compliant agent-driven financial actions.
