Choosing a Catalog for Your Lakehouse: Unity Catalog vs. Polaris vs. Gravitino
Blog post from Acceldata
Choosing among Unity Catalog, Apache Polaris, and Apache Gravitino is a long-term lakehouse governance decision because catalogs manage data discovery, schemas, access control, write coordination, and policy enforcement, and are generally harder to replace than compute engines. Unity Catalog offers the broadest asset coverage, including tables, files, functions, and AI models, but is most suitable for estates centered on the Databricks platform and remains governed through an LF AI & Data sandbox project. Apache Polaris is a vendor-neutral, Apache top-level project focused on the Iceberg REST catalog standard, making it well suited to multi-engine, multi-cloud environments standardized on Iceberg. Apache Gravitino, also an Apache top-level project, aims to federate metadata across existing catalogs, databases, object stores, and table formats, making it relevant for fragmented environments where wholesale migration is impractical. Organizations should assess their future architecture, cross-engine governance requirements, project governance and maturity, support options, planned asset types, and the significant cost of later migration, while recognizing that many enterprises may operate multiple catalogs during transitions.
