Run iOS Live Activities reliably for very large audiences
Blog post from Ably
Ably has introduced public-preview support for iOS Live Activities through Apple’s iOS 18 broadcast channels, enabling a single server update to reach every device following a shared event such as a sports game or flight. The service manages Apple push keys, broadcast-channel creation, device registration, and push-to-start tokens, reducing backend work compared with sending individual updates to every Live Activity token or operating Apple’s broadcast infrastructure directly. Push-to-start support allows servers to launch activities remotely for selected groups, such as fans of a team, although devices must first register their tokens and Apple requires a visible alert in start messages. Broadcast channels are intended for high-audience events with identical, frequent updates, while individualized use cases such as deliveries or ride sharing generally remain better suited to per-device push tokens.
