There's a sign down the street that just says "back to work." It's part of a larger campaign that's eager to get folks back into the office, and—as someone who happens to really like working from home—it's super annoying. Many people who made the shift to remote work are hesitant to go back due to the effort it took to make the switch, especially for entertainers and speakers who have found new audiences online. To keep providing remote services, automation is necessary to take care of menial tasks, allowing for more productivity from anywhere. Various Zaps can be used to automate tasks such as subscribing patrons to mailing lists, tracking payments, sending notifications about live events, creating detailed Google Calendar events, building a customer relationship management system, and sharing content across platforms. Automation also enables recording and uploading videos to ensure that everyone can get up-to-speed at their own pace, regardless of timezones or obligations.

Using no-code or low-code software tools has made it possible for non-technical individuals like myself to build their own mobile app or web app without having to code. I interviewed close to 30 software development shops from around the world, finding that every quote was more than $30,000 and some as high as $150,000. This led me to research alternative ways to build an app without spending lots of money. I learned that no-code and low-code tools allow users to create mobile and web applications using visual drag-and-drop components, similar to a LEGO set for software development. To successfully use these tools, one must first scope out the project, define the problem, determine key features, design the user experience, pick a tool, build, and iterate. The process involves understanding what problem you're solving, narrowing in on the key features of your application, designing the user experience, selecting the right no-code tool or tools, building, and continuously testing and iterating to ensure a successful launch. By using these tools, individuals can create complex web or mobile apps without needing to know how to code, saving time and money in the process.

You can collect user-generated content (UGC) from your customers through various means, including social media platforms like Instagram. To start, create a unique hashtag that tracks all activity related to your company. Promote this hashtag by adding it to previous posts, asking customers who have posted about your brand to add the hashtag, and displaying it on your profile and other marketing materials. Once you've collected UGC, re-share it on your Instagram feed and consider cross-posting it to other social media platforms or using it in brochures and website content. By leveraging user-generated content, you can build trust with your audience, increase post reach, and create a more relatable brand image.

We transitioned from a brick-and-mortar store to an eCommerce brand doing seven figures in annual revenue, but eventually plateaued and needed to re-evaluate our marketing strategy. We focused on search engine optimization (SEO) and initially partnered with an SEO agency, CanIRank, before building our own in-house team. We implemented various SEO strategies, including optimizing commercial pages, blogging to inform rather than sell, and growing brand authority through link building. The pandemic presented a double blow, but we were able to capitalize on the shift towards online shopping, take advantage of lower advertising costs, and continue investing in SEO. By diversifying our products, reducing risk, adapting to change, and investing in online channels, we were able to stay afloat and even see an increase in revenue despite global challenges.

Finding a mentor is not about finding someone with more experience or power, but rather about bringing value to the relationship and extracting the power dynamic. This can be achieved by offering services or expertise that benefit the mentor, as well as being open to learning from them. The most powerful mentorship relationships are linear and reciprocal, where both parties add value to each other. Additionally, mentorship is not limited to traditional hierarchies, but can also involve peers or even more junior individuals mentoring those who are less experienced. By diversifying one's network and seeking out mentors outside of their immediate circle, individuals can enrich their careers and businesses by gaining new insights and perspectives.

I considered several sales channels when launching my fashion line, including eCommerce marketplaces, dropshipping, wholesale, and rental marketplaces. I wish I'd invested more time researching platforms like Shopify before investing in a standalone website, which turned out to be mediocre. I recommend starting small with two or three channels and building on them. Marketplaces like eBay, Amazon, Facebook Marketplace, Bonanza, and Etsy offer exposure to existing customer bases, but each has its own unique features and requirements. Dropshipping allows merchants to sell products without manufacturing goods, while wholesale involves selling products at discounted prices to retailers. Rental marketplaces rent goods to consumers, which can be a good fit for eco-conscious brands like mine. I hope this list offers inspiration as you explore various sales channels.

Popular CMS options include WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Ghost, and managed services like WordPress.com, Squarespace, and Wix, which offer simplified versions with proprietary CMS platforms for customization. Many organizations also build their own custom CMS or heavily modify existing options to suit their specific needs.

Automation gives companies a competitive edge by strengthening performance in areas such as solving customers' pain points, connecting with consumers through storytelling, providing unique selling propositions, offering reliable customer support, and staying ahead of market changes and trends. By amplifying the good stuff you're already doing, automation can help accomplish more by doing less, standardize processes from the start, reduce errors and increase scalability, become a competitive player in your industry, and capture more leads automatically. With automated workflows, startups can empower their teams to work smarter, not harder, and offer a customer experience that's so consistent no one will ever guess they're a team of four working from spare bedrooms or dining room tables. Turning an old manual process into an automated one requires time, effort, and a clear understanding of where to start. Two Zapier Experts, Paul Kortman and Andrew Davison, recommend starting by outlining how the current process works, identifying areas of inefficiency, and reviewing decision points. They advise breaking down the process step-by-step, simplifying it as much as possible, and learning when to automate a task. Once a workflow is created, it's essential to stay flexible, be willing to make changes, and not get frustrated when things don't work as expected. With patience and practice, businesses can successfully automate their manual processes and free up knowledge workers to focus on higher-level tasks.

A "line item" refers to a group of similar things with information about each of them, such as expenses on an invoice or items purchased through an eCommerce platform. In Zapier, line items are used to make it easier to process and use data from various sources. Line items can be used in various ways, such as creating invoices, making complex processes easier, or automating tasks like sending emails. However, not all actions support line items, and when they don't, data may need to be processed manually or using specialized utilities like Formatter by Zapier. The utility allows users to create new line items from text or split existing values into separate line items, making it easier to work with data in other apps.

A company's employee values learning and development (L&D) and has carved out two hours on Fridays to spend on L&D goals, but found it wasn't being used effectively due to being overshadowed by "real" work. The employee suggested moving their L&D block to Monday morning instead, which proved to be a successful strategy as it helped them meet some of their learning goals. This schedule change worked because it frontloaded something that was otherwise easy to put off, eased into the workweek, and helped ward off anxiety by providing a predictable next step. The employee suggests this scheduling trick can be applied to various personal or professional goals, such as creative projects, administrative tasks, or automating processes.

Collecting real, quality feedback from clients is crucial for running a successful business. Asking the right people the right questions can help you write better copy, understand customer pains and objections, and create a better product or service. To get honest feedback, consider asking customers who have just canceled their accounts, as they are often more willing to provide brutal honesty. When collecting feedback, ask open-ended, opinion-based questions that encourage people to share their thoughts and opinions. The best way to collect feedback is through a combination of methods, including surveys, emails, calls, and meetings. Automation can also be used to streamline the process by creating a feedback list, inviting select customers to a call, and sending emails to invite them to a conversation. By regularly scanning through the feedback list and choosing which people to talk to, businesses can gather valuable insights that help them create a better product or service.

I was 12 weeks pregnant at a fast-paced startup with no HR policies or parental leave guidelines, so I had to discuss my needs with the co-founders. They were supportive but didn't know what was normal for maternity leave, so we agreed on 12 weeks of paid leave. However, I felt anxious about coming back to work and wanted to continue working during my leave, as it would have been overwhelming to learn new processes and tech. Eventually, I checked emails and updated documents while caring for my newborn, feeling good about being able to balance work and family responsibilities. Looking back, I believe a one-size-fits-all policy doesn't make sense, and companies should offer customizable parental leave plans that allow employees to choose what works best for them. Communicating early and often with the team, setting a clear return-to-work date, respecting boundaries, preparing for no contact during the leave, being supportive of employee choices, and finding a hybrid plan that gave me control over my work schedule were key factors in making my experience successful.

I'm easily distracted' is the story of how the author's cat interrupted their train of thought, leading to a rant about distractions during presentations on Zoom. The author explains that being easily distractible means they often get sidetracked by unrelated information, such as browser tabs and extensions, which can be detrimental to listening to a presentation. To avoid this scenario, the author shares a tip: instead of sharing the entire browser window, share only the portion of the screen where the actual presentation is, using Zoom's Portion of Screen feature. This allows for a more focused and engaging presentation experience for both the presenter and the audience. The author concludes by joking that their post was essentially a subtweet to colleagues, but benefits the reader nonetheless.

The author argues that corporate jargon and the idea of companies being like families are unhealthy and unproductive. Companies don't employ people out of love or loyalty, but rather because they value their skills and contributions. Quitting a job isn't a betrayal, but rather a normal part of career development. The company you work for doesn't love you, and it's okay to leave if it's not serving your best interests. A true "work family" is formed through relationships with colleagues, which can be maintained even after leaving a company. Business owners should keep this in mind when managing their employees and building their companies.

Here's a neutral and interesting summary of the text in one paragraph:
As companies consider adopting hybrid work arrangements, they must navigate hidden complexities that come with allowing employees to split their time between home and office. While working from home has benefits like focus and being able to grab lunch with coworkers on a whim, office work offers benefits like watercooler discussions and face-to-face interactions. However, creating a rigid policy around meeting up in-person can lead to cliques forming, uneven playing fields, and difficulties in making tough decisions. To overcome these challenges, companies should consider their existing team and potential future hires, run surveys or focus groups to understand team preferences, and take a stance on the hybrid work model. By adopting a mindset that prioritizes collaboration over complexity, companies can create an environment where employees feel valued and connected while still allowing them to run at their own pace.

After testing over 25 popular apps, the top five best meditation apps were identified: Headspace for beginners, Calm for those struggling with relaxation or sleep, Insight Timer for its vast free content, Ten Percent Happier for skeptics, and Waking Up for exploring the science and philosophy of meditation. A great meditation app should have a guided beginners course, varied content, relaxing sounds, and a user-friendly interface. The apps were evaluated based on their approach to beginners, accessibility, and overall user experience. Ultimately, the best meditation app is one that suits an individual's needs and preferences, making it easy to establish a consistent practice.

I'd like to share with you a conversation between David Brownman, a senior platform engineer at Zapier, and his partner Vicky about their experience using Airtable to coordinate the purchase of their new home. They set up an Airtable database that allows them to filter tasks by what can be accomplished right now, divide tasks by who they're assigned to, and even have a dashboard for which tasks are currently in progress. The result is that they've been more coordinated with important tasks as a result. This experience shows how tools used at work can also work for other parts of life, such as buying a home. David's enthusiasm for project management apps was evident throughout the conversation, and his willingness to introduce Vicky to this system has helped them maintain a well-structured approach to household chores going forward. Additionally, David's experience with Airtable is not unique, as it reminds me of my wife's experience using OneNote for our home brewing project, where they chose a familiar tool that worked well for both of them and allowed them to collaborate effectively.

Notion's API allows users to integrate it with other apps and automation tools, automating recurring tasks such as posting online content, managing contacts, and rescheduling meetings. With official integrations like Typeform and Zapier, users can automate actions within Notion without integrating another app, creating a more efficient and effective workspace. A database-first structure optimizes the workspace for integrations, centralizing information in master databases to reduce redundancy, vulnerability to human error, and manual updates, while also enabling automation of contextual filters, data summarization, and long-term scalability. By identifying automation opportunities, such as recurring tasks, transferring information, and standardized procedures, users can create high-impact automated workflows that save time and maximize efficiency.

When does it make sense to pay for products rather than building them yourself? This question has become relevant as Zapier, a bootstrapped company, reevaluates its core values and operations. The "build the robot" mindset, which emphasizes automating tasks through coding and tool-building, may not be sufficient in all cases. Instead, it's essential to consider when to build a tool, when to buy one, or when to hire someone else to automate tasks. This decision depends on various factors, including the complexity of the task, the availability of resources, and the company's goals. By weighing these factors, businesses can make informed decisions about whether to invest time and money in building something themselves or outsourcing it to others.

In May last year, I started a business called Milestone Localization which provides translation and localization services to companies looking to expand globally. Initially, we focused on LinkedIn outreach sending emails to friends-of-friends and colleagues-of-colleagues. We found that our first campaign to mobile gaming companies in the U.S. got opens and clicks but no responses. Our second campaign to fintech startups in India resulted in seven responses, booked four meetings, and landed our first client outside of our peer network. Since then, we've booked 250 meetings and landed 42 enterprise clients from different parts of the world through cold outreach. In the last year, I sent out 221 cold outreach email campaigns to 26,962 people across industries and geographies using five strategies that helped increase open rates and get more replies: creating a targeted email list by identifying the type of company that meets the criteria, role of the person to contact, finding their profiles on LinkedIn and email addresses; using sentence case and approachable language in subject lines; adding a P.S. at the bottom of the email to make it stand out; including a simple CTA at the end to make it easy for the reader to take the next step; and sending a sequence of emails to follow up with prospects who may have missed the initial email or been too busy to reply. By using these strategies, we've seen an average email open rate of 58% compared to the industry average of 18%.

Businesses can compete on brand rather than innovation, and storytelling is a crucial aspect of this strategy, allowing companies to set themselves apart in a crowded marketplace. Every company can tell a story that resonates with its audience, using techniques such as relatability, novelty, fluency, and tension to create an immersive narrative. Brands can categorize their stories into customer-led, product-led, or company-led narratives, each with its own structure and focus. Effective storytelling not only engages customers' emotional and neurological systems but also drives engagement, purchases, and brand loyalty, making it a vital differentiator in marketing. By identifying a story that already resonates with the target audience and shining light on it, businesses can create a unique narrative that sets them apart from competitors.

For as long as I can remember, leadership was the expectation in my career and personal life. However, when I hired the first person on my team, I realized that leadership isn't just about being exceptional, but also a career path with its own set of responsibilities, skills, and opportunities for growth. Leadership shouldn't be the expectation of everyone, as each individual has their unique plan to achieve success and fulfillment. Identifying individual contributors early is crucial, and providing them with development opportunities can help them grow both personally and professionally. Giving them opportunities to grow laterally, such as managing projects or taking on new responsibilities, can also help them develop new skills and contribute to the company in a meaningful way. Finally, ensuring that individual contributors have a seat at the table through regular meetings and decision-making processes is vital for their engagement and success. By understanding each individual's needs and providing them with opportunities for growth, I've learned that leadership isn't just about being exceptional, but also about creating a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.
