August 2022 Summaries

During a summer internship at Vespa, Erlend Solbakken Nikolaisen engaged in two main projects: recreating the Vespa Query Builder using React and developing a Trace Visualizer for identifying query bottlenecks. The Query Builder project involved transforming an older, less integrated HTML and JavaScript system into a React-based application, making it more cohesive and easier to integrate with other tools. The Trace Visualizer project aimed to convert Vespa traces into a format compatible with Jaeger, a third-party visualization tool, requiring the development of a transformation tool to handle complex trace structures. Throughout the internship, Nikolaisen gained valuable insights into new technologies and a software company environment, benefiting greatly from the supportive and knowledgeable colleagues at Vespa.
