In celebration of Pi Day, SingleStore's Engineering team came up with creative ways to compute pi in SQL. The author, a mathematics graduate, had fun exploring these methods and even drew on the company's own history of celebrating Pi Day. SingleStore is known for its playful approach to naming conference rooms after mathematicians and pastries, as well as its product releases being named after pies. The team ultimately settled on using stored procedures to compute pi, comparing their implementation to loading data from /dev/urandom with generated random numbers. With a nod to the company's history of Pi Day celebrations, including eating actual pies and having colleagues nicknamed "Pieguy," the author concludes the post with a mention of cherry pie. The project was made possible by Carl Sverre's graphics and code storage assistance.
