Sauce Labs has expanded its framework-agnostic Real Device Access API from private devices to its shared public pool of iOS and Android devices, allowing users to reserve and control real devices through HTTP and WebSocket connections without requiring Appium, XCTest, or Espresso. The service provides app installation and management, file transfer, live video and logs, HAR network capture, test artifacts, and optional hosted Appium, while its MCP-ready architecture and IDE integrations are intended to support AI agents and developer debugging workflows. Public-device sessions can last up to one hour and offer broad, elastic device access, but restrict low-level controls such as unrestricted ADB commands, device rebooting, custom WebDriverAgent use, and unthrottled transfers; these capabilities, along with sessions up to 24 hours and dedicated hardware, remain available on private devices. Sauce Labs positions the API as a way to handle unexpected system dialogs and other conditions that conventional app-level automation may miss, with public devices suited to short, on-demand testing and private devices intended for long-running, security-sensitive, or highly customized workloads.
