In early September, Replit embarked on a project to enhance its stability and performance amid rapid growth, tackling issues such as high latency and connection failures. Despite initial challenges, including increased latency and connection issues with their legacy Classroom product, the team made significant improvements by optimizing Postgres connections, caching frequently queried objects, and implementing rate limits. These efforts resulted in reduced latency, with the 99th percentile time for loading a repl decreasing from over two minutes to 10-15 seconds, and improved connection success rates to 99.5%. Additionally, the frequency of a stressful reconnection prompt dropped from 2.81% to 1.5%, with further reductions anticipated. Overall, the initiative aimed to address fundamental bottlenecks rather than just immediate symptoms, ensuring a more reliable and faster experience for users.

Replit Community Values and Standards: The Replit community is built on three core values: Empower others, Support one another, and Be kind. The community standards outline what is expected of users to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. This includes being respectful, inclusive, and patient, as well as refraining from hate speech, advertising, spamming, and promoting illegal activities. Users are also expected to give credit to others when using their code, follow licensing guidelines, and avoid exploiting the platform. The community standards are based on Replit's Terms of Service and provide a framework for users to report concerns or issues with moderators or other users.

When we started Repl.it, we set out to remove all friction from getting started with programming by providing a platform where users could start coding quickly without the need for a user account. We've been successful in innovating on sandboxing, security, and anti-abuse tools to ensure that our platform remains secure and open. However, when Google announced it would be charging for reCAPTCHA, we had to make a choice between leaving our site vulnerable to botting or phasing out the anonymous experience and focusing on securing the logged-in user experience. We've decided to phase out the anonymous experience and encourage users to create an account, which will unlock many features and improve their overall experience, including name and organizing repls, hosting apps and websites, collaborating with others, and participating in community forums. With a transition period of only one month, we'll be introducing changes such as limited opportunity for abuse on language pages, requiring login to create a repl and save work, and redirecting repl.run to the repl page, while remaining committed to openness and instantness.
