H.266/VVC and AV1 are next-generation video codecs that trade potential compression efficiency against ecosystem maturity, with AV1 generally better suited to internet-facing streaming because of its open, royalty-free specification, broader browser support, growing hardware availability, and stronger current adoption. A 2026 survey cited AV1 in production at 17% of organizations and planned by another 40%, compared with 4% production use and 29% planned deployment for VVC, while licensing concerns affected 44% of VVC respondents but fewer than 1% of AV1 respondents. VVC is designed for high-efficiency UHD, HDR, 360-degree, and immersive video and may be appropriate for controlled devices or specialized deployments where compatible hardware, software, and licensing arrangements can be assured. Neither codec guarantees a fixed bitrate reduction, lower costs, or lower streaming latency, as results depend on content, encoding settings, hardware, transport, adaptive bitrate behavior, and player buffering. Developers should test both codecs using representative media and actual target devices, measure quality, bitrate, compute use, delay, and cost across the full delivery path, and maintain fallback formats for unsupported browsers and legacy hardware.
