Context engineering is the ongoing practice of designing, retrieving, structuring, and maintaining all information available to an AI model, including instructions, user identity and permissions, company knowledge, tools, and task memory, rather than focusing only on prompt wording. It aims to prevent AI failures caused by too much, too little, stale, irrelevant, or improperly scoped information by supplying the right context dynamically as a task progresses. Effective implementations define desired outcomes, identify necessary data and tools, enforce access permissions, retrieve current source information, separate instructions from reference material, and evaluate inputs for usefulness. At workforce scale, the article argues that context engineering becomes an infrastructure and governance challenge because employees otherwise duplicate setup across AI tools, use inconsistent information, and create uneven or poorly controlled access to company systems. It proposes a shared, governed context layer that connects maintained systems of record to multiple AI tools while applying consistent permissions, approved connectors and skills, model controls, spending limits, auditing, and data-protection policies. Merge for Workforce is presented as a product intended to provide this shared layer across tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Copilot, and Claude Code.

Merge announced support for connecting Meta Muse, Meta’s personal AI agent, to approved workplace systems through its Merge for Workforce platform. The integration uses a governed MCP endpoint that lets organizations control which tools employees can access, apply identity- and group-based permissions, and execute actions using each employee’s existing credentials. Merge says its connector catalog can provide Muse with access to business applications such as Salesforce, Gong, Slack, NetSuite, and Google Drive, while security controls can detect sensitive data, enforce custom policies, redact information, or block risky requests and responses. The platform also logs tool calls, actions, outcomes, and triggered rules to support auditing, compliance, and investigations, while shadow AI discovery is intended to identify ungoverned Muse usage across an organization.

Merge has introduced AI-powered issue resolution in Merge Unified, enabling users to receive integration-specific guidance directly in the dashboard when linked accounts encounter syncing problems. Drawing on the company’s experience, documentation, and support knowledge, the feature explains underlying causes that generic error messages may not reveal and either provides instructions to share with customers or guides users through dashboard changes they can make themselves. A Google Drive example shows how the tool can identify a missing permission scope, direct an administrator to the relevant settings, and restore syncing without opening a support ticket. Available to organizations that opt into Merge’s AI features, the capability supports all integrations, categories, and issue types and is now included across all Merge Unified plans.
