Fleet’s survey of more than 250 enterprise IT practitioners finds that Mac administration is increasingly treated as an engineering discipline, with AI, code editors, CI/CD tools, and declarative device management becoming common parts of administrators’ workflows. Most respondents use AI for troubleshooting, scripting, and configuration authoring, and 86% allow AI-generated output to reach production after review, yet 69% cannot roll back a bad configuration within an hour and 43% need more than a day. The report argues that this gap between rapid AI-assisted deployment and slow recovery creates operational risk, particularly as teams contend with Apple’s frequent release cadence and mixed-device environments. It recommends managing device configurations as code through version control and pull-request reviews, allowing teams to track changes, retain human oversight, and reverse problematic deployments more quickly.

Fleet’s IT team addresses the visibility gap created when spare devices are powered off in storage by syncing warehouse status data from Retriever into Fleet. Retriever manages the physical lifecycle of returned devices, including storage, redeployment, repair, and disposal, while Fleet records device information gathered when hosts are online. A daily script reads Retriever’s API, matches devices to Fleet hosts by serial number, and updates a custom “Warehouse status” host vital only when a status changes. Fleet then uses labels such as “Ready for deployment” to provide a searchable inventory of available equipment, helping employees and IT staff check for reusable devices before purchasing new hardware. The integration uses limited, API-only permissions, is managed through Fleet’s GitOps configuration, and is supported by internal documentation explaining how employees can interpret statuses and locate available devices.

Fleet will host its first free virtual summit on LinkedIn Live on November 10, 2026, beginning at 11 AM ET, featuring four consecutive 30-minute panels moderated by cofounder and CEO Mike McNeil. IT and security practitioners from organizations including Thumbtack, Sonos, Red Hat, Proton, Pinterest, Block, and others will discuss moving device management into version-controlled infrastructure-as-code workflows, the role of open-source and auditable tools in enterprise endpoint management, security and inventory challenges created by AI agents on employee devices, and anticipated changes to devices, IT tools, and endpoint-management skills by 2030. The event will have no slides or demos, focus on practitioners’ firsthand experiences and lessons learned, and allow viewers to submit questions through LinkedIn comments during the broadcast.
