Specialized AI models, or expert models, are designed for narrow tasks such as personal-data removal, moderation, OCR, translation, speech transcription, and invoice parsing, generally producing structured, auditable outputs faster and more predictably than general-purpose LLMs. Eden AI’s comparison of expert models with Gemini 3.8 Flash found that anonymization was roughly 30 times faster and 15 times cheaper with a Microsoft specialist model, while OpenAI’s moderation model was free, about 12 times faster, and provided configurable category-level scores; invoice parsing produced mixed results, with the specialist offering consistent schemas and standardized fields but missing an IBAN that Gemini identified. The findings support using specialized models for high-volume, compliance-sensitive, or repetitive workflows and reserving LLMs for reasoning, writing, changing formats, and other open-ended work. Gartner forecasts that organizations will use task-specific models at least three times more than general-purpose LLMs by 2027 because of lower latency, compute use, and operating costs, although the cited tests were limited and should be validated on real data. Eden AI positions its platform as a way to combine both model types through one API, such as anonymizing a customer ticket before sending it to an LLM to draft a response, while allowing providers to be switched without changing output formats.
