Checkr’s 2026 Hiring Hoax report, based on a survey of 3,000 U.S. hiring managers, finds that AI-enabled identity fraud and candidate deception are increasingly challenging employers’ hiring processes. Forty percent of respondents said they had interviewed someone later found to be using a fake identity, while 68% believed candidates using AI were better at falsifying identities than companies were at detecting fraud. Although fraud training and third-party background checks have expanded, only 23% of managers were extremely confident their organizations could identify a fraudulent candidate. The report emphasizes that most anti-fraud efforts remain focused on pre-hire screening despite 38% of managers suspecting fraudulent employees may already be working undetected and concerns about dual employment. Checkr argues that employers need ongoing identity and credential verification after hiring, particularly as workers gain access to sensitive systems and data, and promotes its Fraud Detection Suite as a tool for identifying AI-generated resumes, deepfakes, and identity misuse.

Checkr launched its Fraud Detection Suite to help employers identify AI-enabled hiring fraud throughout the recruiting and employment lifecycle, from applications and interviews to post-hire reverification. The company says threats now extend beyond falsified resumes to identity impersonation, deepfakes, stolen identities, location masking, and device spoofing, citing U.S. government warnings about North Korean IT-worker schemes. Its beta data found that 36% of inbound resumes received flags for review, with software and AI engineering roles showing particularly high rates. The suite combines resume and credential checks with fraud-signal analysis, image matching, deepfake detection, biometric and liveness verification, device analysis, and location correlation, drawing on Checkr’s database of more than 260 million verified U.S. identities. Available immediately, the product is intended to provide employers with continuous, layered verification rather than relying on one-time background or identity checks.

Checkr announced an expanded mortgage verification offering that combines income, employment, and asset data following its 2025 acquisition of Truework and subsequent investments in technology and partnerships. The company cited research indicating that mortgage applicants with unstable income increased from 50% in 2022 to 62% in 2025, with the severity of income fluctuations nearly tripling. Its expanded capabilities include the August 2026 acquisition of Truv for consumer-permissioned payroll and financial data, a September partnership with Workday for participating employers’ verified records, and support for qualifying self-employment, rental, and other complex income sources. Checkr says its platform can verify over 97% of U.S. workers, achieves a 75% completion rate, and uses payroll, bank, employer, and document-based sources to reduce manual processing for lenders.
