The UK is experiencing a cost of living crisis, driven by rising energy costs, with the energy price cap increasing by 54% in April 2022 and set to rise by another £800 in October. A powerful tool to help address this crisis is improved availability and analytics of energy data, which can provide insights into energy consumption efficiency, costs, and CO2 emissions linked to demographic factors. CARTO's data partner Doorda has shared the "Residential Energy Performance" dataset, which provides detailed information on energy consumption efficiency, costs, and CO2 emissions for domestic and commercial buildings in the UK. The dataset is based on Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) issued since 2008 and combines demographic data sources to create an extremely granular dataset with 169 individual variables. By analyzing this data, analysts can gain location-based insights into energy performance, allowing them to identify areas with the greatest potential for improvement and target specific building upgrades such as glazing and wall insulation. The dataset has been made possible through the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme and is available on CARTO's Data Observatory.

The Yale Climate Connections team has created a spatial visualization map using CARTO to share local stories about climate change, targeting the Alarmed and Concerned groups most concerned about and motivated to combat climate change. The map highlights radio stations airing the Climate Connections show, articles, and videos, with color-coded icons indicating language spoken, allowing users to quickly pinpoint information of interest. By leveraging location intelligence, YCC aims to empower users to engage with local stories, making climate change more relatable and real, while also identifying gaps in their activities to inform future strategies.

The growing threat of climate change poses significant risks to the built environment, impacting health, safety, and infrastructure investments. To better understand and mitigate these risks, governments can leverage CARTO's Climate Insights offering in conjunction with Google Cloud, providing a cloud-native Location Intelligence platform that combines unique climate-related data sources and analytical capabilities for more accurate insights. This platform enables policy-makers to analyze multiple risk scenarios quickly and at scale, ultimately informing more effective planning and investment decisions for infrastructure resiliency.

The global data monetization market is projected to reach over $15.4 billion by 2030, driven by the increasing availability and variety of new business intelligence and data science platforms, as well as the progressive shift toward data-driven decision-making strategies implemented by a growing number of companies. Data monetization refers to the process of earning revenue in exchange for the data assets a company generates and/or collects, with two types being internal data monetization using data internally in Business Intelligence or Advanced Analytics departments to gain greater insights into a company's own operations or customers, and external data monetization selling data to third parties in raw form or as analysis and insights. External data monetization categories include marketing data, behavioral data, operational data, and commercial data, which can be used to improve competitive advantage, strengthen understanding of customers, assist in finding new areas of growth, streamline decision-making, and generate more revenue for businesses. To develop a spatial data monetization strategy, companies should ensure data quality, choose the best delivery mechanisms, and document their data well, as exemplified by Vodafone's successful development of its spatial data product using Location Intelligence, which provides insights into human mobility patterns that enable better decision-making for key sectors such as Real Estate, Tourism, and Retail.

ASDA, one of the largest British supermarket chains, uses Location Intelligence data and analysis to inform their site selection for their "toyou" pick-up and drop-off service lockers. They leverage a unique CARTO dashboard to visualize and analyze rich spatial datasets, including point of interest, human mobility, and demographics data. By using this platform, ASDA can make informed decisions on which locations to invest in, based on factors such as proximity to target demographic segments, cannibalization from existing store estates, and external factors that impact the final mile for click-and-collect conversions. The platform provides a user-friendly interface, rich datasets, and support from experienced geospatial experts, enabling ASDA to expand their network and drive business growth.
