To get started with CartoDB's native mobile SDK, developers need to register an account at developer.nutiteq.com, which requires re-registering on cartodb.com as well. The process involves selecting a package, developing the app, sharing it, and publishing it to the app store or sharing privately within an enterprise. The development process includes accessing resources such as guides, code samples, sample projects, and support channels like StackOverflow and public forums. The guidelines for the Nutiteq Maps SDK are currently available on developer.nutiteq.com and will soon be included in CartoDB's developer documentation.

Improve your (musical) timing with CartoDB Time Isolines and derive the best data insights
The CartoDB platform now offers a new feature called Time and Distance Isolines, which allows users to measure time directly through SQL statements. This feature provides insight and analysis on how long it takes pedestrians to move from one hotspot to another, making tactical business planning easier. By visualizing this data, businesses can determine the most efficient way to spend their time, as time is money. The feature was tested with SXSW music events, where it showed how much time it takes to get from each venue and hotel to other entertainment spots. To use this feature, users must scrape data from a website using node.js and libraries like request, cheerio, and underscore, then upload the data to a PostgreSQL table using CartoDB's Import API. The addresses of the venues are automatically geocoded in the process, converting raw data into geo-data that can be put on a map with the CartoDB Editor. Users can create isolines for each hotspot by calling the cdb_isochrone function, and they can also use this feature to show synthetical lists of closest events from a given venue. The app also incorporates data from Spotify's REST API to match SXSW artist names to song samples and artist visuals. The app is built using CartoDB.js as the nerve center, with heavy use of templating using underscore.js to allow for dynamic HTML elements and SQL requests to CartoDB SQL APIs.

By leveraging US census data in CARTO's Data Observatory, researchers have been able to visualize Airbnb's impact on neighborhoods at a block-by-block level. The analysis reveals that while Airbnb listings are concentrated in centrally-located city areas, their effect on neighborhoods is more nuanced, with high-density neighborhoods like Manhattan's Upper East Side and Lower East Side experiencing lower rates of Airbnb listings per square mile due to existing large stock of apartments. In contrast, lower-density neighborhoods like Brooklyn's Williamsburg and Greenpoint are more susceptible to impact from Airbnb listings. The study also found that areas with high profitability clusters, such as Chinatown and Manhattan Valley, have median Airbnb listing prices that cost 25% of median rent, allowing residents to easily pay a month's rent in just four days. These findings provide new insights into the effects of the sharing economy on neighborhoods and can be applied to other cities across the US.

The author created maps showing walking routes for people in Brooklyn to their nearest L train stop, using data from the US Census and LODES dataset. They used Valhalla's routing solution to generate pedestrian routes, but found that with many overlapping segments, it was difficult to gauge the number of people along each route. To address this issue, they developed a PL/PGSQL function to segment the lines into straight parts with no turns, and then aggregated the data to style the routes by line thickness and color based on the number of commuters and maximum commute time along each segment. The final map shows powerful and impactful visualizations of the walking commutes, allowing users to better understand the impact of the L train closure on local communities.

The US Census provides a wealth of detailed information about the population, but its packaged data lacks sufficient attributes to answer certain questions. Machine learning can help overcome this limitation by upsampling the data to finer spatial resolutions, such as Census Block Groups. By using a predictive model trained on PUMAS data at a coarser scale, the model can be applied to the Census Block Group level to create new variables and produce maps of specific populations, like those with vision and hearing problems. This approach enables segmentation, which is valuable for various applications, including non-profits, businesses, and election campaigns.

To make insightful dot density visualizations, users can explore CARTO's blog post on spatial data visualization and learn how to create them using SQL. By applying a PLPGSQL function to census block group data, users can turn geometries and counts into points that convey the diversity of ethnic groups across the US. This method is particularly useful for smaller areas where computation time is manageable, allowing for powerful insights into population demographics.
