October 2013 Summaries

The author is excited to participate in several conferences and workshops this Fall, including NACIS in Greenville, South Carolina, where they will demonstrate CartoDB and present on its future plans. The conference schedule includes a presentation at the Practical Cartography Day, two CartoDB intro workshops, and hands-on demonstrations and Q&A sessions. Additionally, the author has upcoming events in Texas, EcoHack in New York, San Francisco, and São Paulo, as well as presentations at Yale. These events will showcase the capabilities of CartoDB and its potential for government use, storytelling through visualization, and more.

The authors tracked the movements of 30 birds, including Eric the seagull, using solar-powered GPS units in real-time. The study focuses on Eric's life, a male Lesser Black-backed Gull breeding in Zeebrugge colony, over two months. CartoDB technologies were used to create interactive maps and analyze Eric's movement patterns, providing insights into his daily habits. The authors also made the data available under Creative Commons, allowing others to explore and build upon their work.
