The New York World, in collaboration with Columbia Journalism School, has published an interactive map using CartoDB that analyzes NYPD stop-and-frisk incidents across New York City blocks in 2011, providing a new insight into the issue. The map uses data journalism and street reporting to show the number of incidents recorded for every block throughout 2011. Data journalist Michael Keller worked with reporter Alice Brennan to clean the data and create the map code, while a graduate student at Columbia University's applied statistics program helped identify hotspots. The resulting map displays 685,724 stops and allows users to browse all the data, including personal stories and reporting that give a new compelling perspective on the issue.

The bike-share program in NYC will be launched with around 420 stations and is expected to grow to 10,000 bikes and 600 rental stations by summer 2013. A draft map of proposed locations has been released for public feedback, with the goal of facilitating "first and last mile" commutes and tourist trips. An analysis using CartoDB found that most proposed locations are near subway entrances or bus stops, suggesting the system is on track to meet its goals. The program's success will also depend on the allocation of funds, which has not been discussed in the released map.
