Announcing YugabyteDB 2.5

YugabyteDB 2.5 introduces significant enhancements to its multi-region capabilities, performance, and security features, making it a more comprehensive distributed SQL database for cloud-native applications. The release adds row-level geo-partitioning and follower reads, enhancing multi-region deployment options and improving data proximity for better performance, costs, or compliance reasons. It also introduces enterprise-grade security features, including authentication using SCRAM-SHA-256, transparent data encryption, column-level encryption, and audit capabilities. Additionally, the database can now run the TPC-C benchmark against 100,000 warehouses, showcasing improved performance. Core features have been enhanced with support for table-level partitions, event triggers, online index rebuilds, and detailed query plan analysis. The release also simplifies cluster administration, improves usability, and includes pre-installed extensions and a community-driven Grafana dashboard. Future releases will focus on core database features like point-in-time recovery, incremental backups, and better support for online schema migrations, as well as more security features and third-party penetration testing and code audit capabilities.
