Codes of Conduct are essential tools for promoting inclusion and protecting members from harassment in online communities. However, designing and enforcing them can be challenging, especially when there's a lack of clear processes and policies in place. The author shares their experience managing the LGBTQ+ community Slack, where they learned hard lessons about effective management and enforcement. They then experimented with a new approach by creating a separate community called WeAllJS, which adopted a detailed Code of Conduct and an innovative enforcement process that prioritized community involvement and nuanced decision-making. By sharing these insights, the author aims to provide guidance for community managers and open-source project maintainers looking to create more inclusive and effective communities.
