Space exploration and time-series data: Why the European Space Agency uses PostgreSQL

The European Space Agency (ESA) is collecting massive amounts of data from its various space missions and needs a reliable database system to store this data. The ESA's ESDC department chose PostgreSQL as the primary database due to its reliability, scalability, and community support. However, PostgreSQL alone couldn't handle the time-series data requirements, so they added TimescaleDB, an open-source time-series database packaged as a PostgreSQL extension, to scale and manage their vast amounts of temporal data. With TimescaleDB, ESDC can harness the power of time-series data, enabling them to analyze and understand complex phenomena in space exploration.
