Activity Streams and News Feeds for Real-Time Use Cases
Blog post from Stream
Stream has significantly enhanced its real-time infrastructure to improve the delivery speed of feed updates, which is crucial for applications with large followings such as live sports, gaming, and social notifications. Previously, the Python-based system took up to 2 minutes for updates to reach users, but the new system, rewritten in Go, reduces the average round-trip time to 230 milliseconds, with the 99th percentile at 550 milliseconds. This rapid performance is achieved by ensuring that notifications are only sent after the activity insert and fanout are complete, preventing users from receiving notifications for activities not yet available. Stream plans to further enhance its real-time infrastructure with socket.io support to facilitate connections across multiple platforms like iOS, Android, and React-Native, while continuing to optimize performance, promising even faster updates in the future.
