Open source software needs funding to ensure maintainers have enough time to dedicate towards fixing issues and ensuring the stability and security of their applications. Many open source libraries rely on a small number of contributors, which can lead to bugs not being fixed in a timely manner or unmitigated security issues. However, despite these challenges, the open source community is thriving with more developers contributing than ever before, including first-time contributors. Open source is also being used everywhere from hobby projects to massive web applications on the planet. To make open source better, individuals can consider donating money to their most-used open source projects, contributing time to projects they build on top of, using free security tooling like Snyk, and addressing urgent issues as they arise while keeping a level head. The community is working to improve security through initiatives like the OpenSSF and increasing access to free security education resources.
