Yes, Open Source Is Sustainable
We discussed the future of open source and its sustainability with six maintainers of popular projects, including Claudéric Demers, Carl Lerche, Daniel Stenberg, Tom Christie, Henry Zhu, and Mfon Eti-mfon. We explored the concept of an ideal open source career, economic frameworks for relating to community-supported work, and models for categorizing open source projects. The panel concluded that despite challenges, open source is indeed sustainable, with clear existence proofs of maintainers making a living through platforms like GitHub Sponsors and companies supporting such careers out of enlightened self-interest. Our conversation highlighted the progress made in recent years, including Tom's point that even five years ago, the idea of community-supported open-source careers was an unrealized dream, now realized by many. The overall trend in sustainability is positive, with a bright future ahead for open source.
