Observations from ScyllaDB University LIVE, Fall 2021

ScyllaDB University LIVE, held in Fall 2021, was an interactive, instructor-led event focused on training attendees on NoSQL essentials and advanced ScyllaDB techniques, providing a half-day of free education. The event featured two tracks: ScyllaDB Essentials, which saw the highest attendance, and Advanced topics, which garnered the most engagement. The Basics session, led by VP of Product Tzach Livyatan, covered key aspects such as data modeling, primary key selection, and compaction strategies. Questions during the event addressed differences between ScyllaDB and Apache Cassandra, use cases for CQL versus the Alternator DynamoDB API, and the availability of session recordings, highlighting ongoing developments like enhanced performance and consistency improvements using the RAFT protocol. Polls revealed that most attendees were new to ScyllaDB, with a significant interest in ScyllaDB Open Source, and data management capacities ranging from less than a terabyte to over 50 terabytes. Future events were announced, encouraging continued engagement with ScyllaDB University’s free resources.
