On-Call Best Practices: Part 1
Blog post from PagerDuty
Being on-call can be challenging, especially when high-severity alerts need to be addressed promptly to minimize downtime and mean time to recovery (MTTR). Essential tools for on-call shifts include a cellphone with a loud ringer and a mobile USB broadband modem or hotspot for remote connectivity, which prevents the need to rush to a fixed location for internet access. It's crucial to configure multiple contact methods in systems like PagerDuty to ensure reliable delivery of notifications, as SMS alone can experience delays. Combining SMS with phone notifications, and possibly even a landline or pager, enhances the chances of timely alerts. Future discussions in this series will explore creating efficient on-call schedules and escalation policies.
