In the lead-up to Octopus 3.0, significant changes are being introduced to enhance deployment flexibility and efficiency, including the expansion of deployment targets beyond the traditional Tentacle model. The new version will support a variety of deployment targets such as SSH, Azure Websites, Azure Cloud Services, WebDeploy, and offline drops, allowing for more versatile deployment scenarios. The architecture is being restructured to decouple Tentacle's communication and deployment functions, transforming it into a simpler shell that primarily runs commands and transfers files, while the deployment logic is handled by the Octopus server. This change will facilitate easier updates and customization, as the core deployment scripts and tools are being open sourced, encouraging community contributions. Additionally, FTP deployments are being deprecated due to low usage, with alternatives like WebDeploy and Azure support being prioritized. A preview of these changes is expected to be released around late March or early April, inviting feedback from users on the proposed enhancements and open-source initiative.
