Mapbox Logistics tools were instrumental in disaster response following a late-season tornado outbreak on December 10th that devastated parts of the southern and central United States. The tornadoes, spanning approximately 260 miles from Arkansas to Kentucky, necessitated rapid data and logistical coordination to aid affected communities effectively. World Central Kitchen (WCK) quickly responded by establishing meal distribution locations, using Mapbox GL JS for mapping, alongside post-disaster imagery from Maxar’s open data program to contextualize these efforts. Additionally, Mapbox Movement Data provided real-time situational awareness, showing a significant increase in movement as people sought shelter, which contrasted with the reduced movement seen during the COVID pandemic lockdowns. This data was crucial for responders to understand the dynamics of the situation and make informed logistical decisions.
