Mapbox has significantly enhanced its satellite imagery by acquiring 135 million square kilometers of high-resolution data from Maxar, marking the largest purchase of Maxar’s Vivid Basic basemap to date. This update, covering most of the globe except for parts of Antarctica and Greenland, utilizes imagery from Maxar's advanced WorldView satellites, known for their high-resolution capabilities. The updated imagery, which features a 50 cm native resolution, enhances the interactive map experience by allowing detailed views such as reading runway markings and analyzing construction sites. This upgrade integrates with the new GL JS v2 web SDK and Mapbox Tiling Service (MTS), enabling the creation of custom maps with continuously updated data processed through distributed and parallelized methods, ensuring faster processing than traditional server setups. The new imagery breathes life into previously flat images and brings significant improvements to various regions, with the rollout expected to be completed by early January.
