Kong has announced a new research project called Kong Embedded, which is designed to extend the capabilities of its Kong Gateway by enabling deployment on low-power consumer and edge devices, such as those in industrial IoT and enterprise edge settings. Known for its minimal resource requirements, Kong Gateway can now be utilized on devices with constrained hardware, potentially lowering the total cost of ownership by increasing throughput on the same hardware. Kong Embedded can be compiled for mobile architectures like ARM CPUs and operates without a database, simplifying its architecture and reducing resource needs. This project opens up new possibilities for securing devices and APIs on the edge, enabling device-to-device communication, rate-limiting API access, and implementing custom logic on edge devices. Currently, in early development, Kong Embedded is available on an invite-only basis, and interested parties are encouraged to express their use cases for potential inclusion in the product evaluation.
