Kong has announced the acquisition of Insomnia, a popular API testing and debugging tool, marking a strategic move to enhance its service control platform offerings. Insomnia, initially a side project by Gregory, evolved over five years from a Chrome web app to an open-source standalone desktop application, eventually incorporating a paid plan. This acquisition aligns with Kong's journey from an open-source project to a sustainable open-core business, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining open-source values and serving the API community. Insomnia will become the foundation for Kong Studio, Kong's first product dedicated to assisting customers in building and testing APIs and microservices, while ensuring no disruption for existing Insomnia users.
