New Text-to-Speech API for Chrome extensions
Blog post from Google Cloud
Google introduced a new Text-to-Speech (TTS) API for Chrome extensions and packaged apps, aiming to provide a simple, powerful, and flexible way for developers to integrate synthesized speech into their applications. The API allows easy adjustments to speech characteristics like rate, pitch, and volume and supports callbacks for synchronizing speech with applications. It also offers a variety of voices, enhancing user experience by allowing developers to implement custom speech engines using web technologies. This API is robust enough to support accessibility tools like ChromeVox, a screen reader for visually impaired users. While Chrome OS includes a built-in speech engine, users on other operating systems can install additional voices from the Chrome Web Store to expand their options. This initiative encourages developers to integrate speech functionalities into their apps, with the added incentive of community engagement through the hashtag #chrometts.
