Mobile web and machine learning solutions: Case studies from Launchpad Accelerator

In July 2016, Google hosted the second cohort of its Launchpad Accelerator program, which supports late-stage startups in overcoming app-related challenges through mentorship at Google HQ. One featured participant was MagicPin, an Indian social network app designed to connect local merchants with specific user bases. MagicPin faced a significant challenge in India, where limited device storage and a general reluctance to download apps posed barriers to user engagement. To address this, MagicPin adopted Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), which allow users to engage with app-like experiences directly through a web interface without requiring an initial download, thus overcoming storage constraints and providing a seamless user experience. This transition enabled MagicPin to offer a micro version of their platform that functions offline, further enhancing user interaction without necessitating high storage space commitments. The Launchpad Accelerator program ultimately aims to help such startups scale effectively, with MagicPin demonstrating the potential of PWAs as a solution to common mobile web challenges in emerging markets.
