Google Summer of Code 2012, announced at FOSDEM by Carol Smith from Google's Open Source Team, marks its eighth year as a program designed to introduce college and university students globally to open source software development. The initiative provides stipends to student developers to contribute code to various open source projects, guided by mentoring organizations worldwide. Since its inception, the program has engaged over 6,000 students from more than 90 countries, aiming to help students tackle academic challenges over the summer while producing and releasing open source code for public use. The announcement encourages spreading the word to potential student participants and mentoring organizations and directs interested parties to the Google Summer of Code 2012 website for timelines and FAQs, with more details forthcoming.
