Summary

Reviewer Roulette, initially introduced over a year ago at GitLab, was created to distribute code reviews evenly among engineers and prevent knowledge silos. While it successfully streamlined the review process, it faced challenges such as inconsistent use and deployment issues. The integration with Slack did not fit all workflows, and as a result, some engineers used it intermittently. To address these issues, the Danger bot was incorporated into the CI pipeline, automatically assigning reviewers and maintainers within merge requests, thus eliminating the need for Slack-based reviewer selection. This integration improved the tool's usability and reliability, though it currently only benefits the main GitLab project and not its satellite projects or community contributors. Future plans aim to integrate Reviewer Roulette as a feature within GitLab itself, potentially utilizing the CODEOWNERS file to extend its benefits to all GitLab users.
