Integration management for git projects
Blog post from GitLab
GitLab is an integrated platform designed to streamline the DevOps lifecycle, allowing users to manage their workflows effectively by integrating with various third-party applications like Slack, Jira, and Prometheus. It promotes a unified toolchain, but also supports flexible integration management for organizations with specific tool preferences. Initially, integrations were managed at the project level, requiring individual configurations for each project, but with the release of GitLab 13.3 and later 13.6, integration management was expanded to the instance and group levels, significantly reducing administrative overhead and enhancing security by allowing group and instance administrators to manage integrations without sharing credentials with each project owner. This group-level integration management is available for free on GitLab.com and self-managed installations running version 13.6 and later. The new feature also aims to replace the limited Service Templates, which will be deprecated in GitLab 14.0, by offering a more efficient way to manage ongoing integrations across multiple projects, reducing the need for custom scripts and maintenance. GitLab continues to explore enhancements like inheritance overviews and field masking to further ease the management of integrations for administrators and group owners.
