User-generated content can enhance website interactivity and community but also exposes sites to potential abuse from malicious users, necessitating measures like content moderation and, in extreme cases, permanent bans. The article explores six methods for banning users by leveraging unique identifiers: IP address bans, cookie-based bans, blocking specific usernames or email addresses, banning entire email domains, deploying stealth mode or shadowbans, and using a browser fingerprinting service like Fingerprint. Each method has limitations, such as being easily circumvented by determined users or unintentionally blocking legitimate users, but browser fingerprinting is highlighted as the most effective due to its resilience against common evasion tactics like VPNs and incognito mode. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of robust identification solutions for fostering safer online communities despite the persistent challenge of circumventing bans.
