Edge computing is emerging as a solution to the limitations of cloud-only applications, particularly in terms of high availability and ultra-low latency, by bringing data and compute closer to users. Dave McCarthy, Research VP at IDC, highlighted during a keynote at the Connect ONLINE developer conference that edge computing is increasingly seen as a strategic investment, with 73% of surveyed organizations acknowledging its importance. Motivations for adopting edge solutions include cost efficiency, security, compliance, and improved latency. The computing model spectrum ranges from the core public cloud to on-device processing, offering varied latency and performance benefits. AWS Edge Services, such as AWS Wavelength and AWS Local Zones, were showcased for their significant latency reductions in Couchbase's tests, demonstrating the effectiveness of edge solutions in real-world scenarios. McCarthy emphasized edge as a complement to cloud infrastructure, advocating for a distributed approach tailored to specific needs and highlighting the ongoing innovations in the sector.
