Alastair Coote, a web developer based in New York, is developing a taxi assistant app called Taxonomy using publicly available data from the NYC Open Data website. Taxonomy leverages the Foursquare API for venue search and CartoDB to store and query street intersections, allowing users to track their trips, calculate time to destination, review experiences, and share ride details with friends. The app is a result of Coote's hands-on approach to learning custom map design and has been submitted to the NYC BigApps competition, where it can be downloaded for free from the App Store.
