When Sade sang about "Coast to coast LA to Chicago", she didn't consider the geography of those cities, a realization that sparked the creator's curiosity about how music is geographically spatial. A friend suggested the origins of American Jazz are global and spatial, prompting Javier Arce from CartoDB to create a map on Spotify songs and cities using regular expressions and infinite patience. He extracted data from Wikipedia articles and imported it into his CartoDB account, then used JavaScript, the Spotify API, and a Play Button Widget to create the map, which displays cities with green beamed eighth note icons and countries in a Choropleth map. Javier's process involved geocoding, table creation, joining tables, and styling, resulting in a unique map showcasing music's global connections.
