This week, CartoDB celebrated Valentine's Day with a Geo-NYC Meetup event themed "Love Stinks," where they created a series of maps to give out as postcards. The maps were generated using the Static Maps API and featured trajectories drawn between survey respondents' locations. After some initial issues with plotting lines, they used PostGIS to smooth out the lines and applied a heart PNG to the centroid of each line. The resulting images were then packaged into an InDesign template for printing, using custom basemaps and image processing techniques to ensure high-quality prints. The postcards were well-received by attendees, who appreciated the personalized nature of the maps.
