Twilio has launched a software engineering apprenticeship program called Hatch, designed to bridge the gap between new college graduates and junior-level technical positions in the tech industry. The program aims to remove barriers and find talent from underrepresented groups, non-traditional educations, or self-taught developers who might not be considered by other companies. The rigorous application process includes an online application, coding exercise, and full-day onsite interview for selected candidates, followed by a six-month train-to-hire program with the aim of converting apprentices to full-time software engineers. The program focuses on fostering an inclusive community, learning, and mentorship, with a strong emphasis on soft skills such as good communication skills and a thirst for knowledge. Hatch has converted 92% of its apprentices to full-time employees, with the goal of having 100 apprentices complete the program by 2023 and helping them maintain their growth trajectory and position them for leadership roles within the company.
