The latest State of PostgreSQL survey has revealed insights into the community, usage, and preferences of PostgreSQL users. The survey, which reached nearly 1,000 respondents, found that PostgreSQL's user base is growing, with a significant increase in small and medium-sized businesses using the database. The majority of respondents preferred technical documentation as their primary source of learning about PostgreSQL, while new generations of users favored video tutorials. Community contribution to PostgreSQL remains low, with only 12% of respondents having contributed "sometimes." However, Heikki Linnakangas, a long-time PostgreSQL developer and committer, emphasized the importance of making it easier for contributors to contribute, citing the large codebase and learning curve as major barriers. The survey also found that PostgreSQL is widely known and has become the default for new applications, with "open source" being the primary reason users choose the database over others. As PostgreSQL celebrates its 25th anniversary, Linnakangas predicted that the database will continue to evolve, adopting new technologies and innovations while remaining compatible with existing applications and ecosystems.
