Timescale Cloud is a cloud-native relational database platform for time series and analytics built on PostgreSQL. It aims to create a seamless developer experience, prioritizing user-centered design and transparency. The platform's evolution involved several stages, including the initial Timescale Forge era, where the design was improved with smaller font sizes, increased screen space, and better legibility. After renaming to Timescale Cloud, a UI exercise helped set a vision for the future design. A new design system and UI library were developed in Figma, and reusable components were implemented to improve engineering velocity and reduce inconsistencies. The platform also adopted Storybook and Chromatic for efficient collaboration between designers and developers. A major redesign was launched in September 2021, which included a new interface, improved structure, and better developer experience. The platform now offers features like resizable databases, autoscaling, and high availability. Its journey has just begun, with ongoing iteration, education, and promotion of the new interface to users and colleagues.
