Prismic Insider Perspective: Best Practices for Building Your Slice Library
Blog post from Prismic
In 2023, after launching a newly rebuilt website, the team embarked on an ambitious project to overhaul their slice library, a collection of modular website components, to enhance content creation and future-proof their processes. The team prioritized a user-centered approach to slice naming, which allows marketing teams to quickly find the right slice based on its use case rather than its technical attributes. This modular approach is facilitated by the developer tool, Slice Machine, which enables the creation and management of slices for use in a visual Page Builder. The restructuring process aimed to balance the needs of marketers and developers by simplifying choices, ensuring naming consistency, and aligning slice structures with marketing strategies. The rebuild involved a methodical six-step cycle—Reconnoiter, Refine, Replace, Review, Remove, and Repeat—allowing for incremental improvements without halting production. The project aimed to reduce decision fatigue for marketers, maintain brand consistency, and ensure efficient collaboration between teams. The effort underscores the importance of strategic planning, modular design, and continuous improvement in maintaining a scalable and efficient slice library.
