The Competitive Advantage of Teamwork
Blog post from PagerDuty
At the PagerDuty Summit 2018, Patrick Lencioni discussed the significance of fostering a culture of teamwork by emphasizing trust and vulnerability, which serve as the foundation for high-performing teams. His insights are based on overcoming five key dysfunctions: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. Lencioni highlighted the necessity of vulnerability-based trust, where team members feel secure enough to admit mistakes and ask for help, and stressed that leaders must lead by example to build this trust. Conflict, when grounded in trust, should be embraced as it can lead to better decision-making through healthy ideological debates. Commitment to collective goals is achieved when team members feel their opinions are valued, and accountability thrives when peers hold each other responsible, with leaders setting the standard. Finally, a focus on collective results rather than individual achievements drives team success, as a lack of results-oriented goals undermines all other efforts.
