I attended PyGotham 2018, my first Python conference, where I enjoyed talks on using lesser-known features, company uses of Python, and internal details. Evan Morikawa's talk about bug detection was fascinating, while Nikhil Marathe's talk on translating backtraces into stack traces was educational. However, the most impressive talk was about open source software by Karen Sandler, who demonstrated its importance in critical situations like her own life-threatening situation with a defibrillator implant. She argued that open source should replace corporate gatekeepers for bug fixes and inspired me to learn more about open source licenses covering MongoDB products. I also appreciated the value of Python as free, open source software and the volunteers behind PyGotham conferences.
