Metabase is undertaking a project to localize its platform to better serve users who speak languages other than English, aiming to expand its user base. This initiative involves two main stages: localizing user-facing interfaces and then admin-facing interfaces, with the help of the community for translations. Languages are elevated to a "Primary" status based on criteria such as 100% translation coverage, design compatibility, and native speaker approval. A committed translator must ensure the language remains updated with each release cycle. If a language's quality diminishes, it may be downgraded to a "Secondary" status, which limits the ease of its selection by end users. This effort requires community involvement, as the core team lacks the resources to manage all translations alone. The project aims to create a more inclusive platform, making Metabase accessible to a broader audience.
