Storytelling frameworks in UI: Hero’s Journey vs. Pixar
Blog post from LogRocket
Storytelling frameworks like the Hero’s Journey and Pixar’s Storytelling Framework are valuable tools for UX designers, allowing them to craft narratives that enhance user experience by focusing on user problems and solutions. The Hero’s Journey offers a detailed, 12-step process that encourages extensive UX research and a deep understanding of user needs, whereas Pixar’s six-step framework provides a more streamlined, efficient approach suitable for quick scripting and cross-functional collaboration. While the Hero’s Journey can be complex and research-intensive, Pixar’s model is simpler and more accessible, though potentially less detailed. Combining both frameworks can be effective, using the Hero’s Journey for comprehensive insight gathering and Pixar’s framework for creating digestible, collaborative scripts. Additionally, the Problem-Agitate-Solution (PAS) framework, although not a storytelling model, can be useful for presenting products as solutions to user issues in a narrative format.
