CircleCI has partnered with GameCI to enhance the integration of continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) into the game development process through the introduction of the Unity orb, a reusable configuration component for CircleCI. This orb simplifies building and testing Unity projects across various platforms, such as macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS, by allowing users to manage dependencies and execute tests with minimal configuration. GameCI, founded in 2019, initially provided Docker images for building Unity projects and later expanded to GitHub Actions, and now aims to become a CI-agnostic CLI tool. CircleCI's collaboration with GameCI leverages open-source principles to incorporate CI/CD without disrupting the core focus of game development. The Unity orb can operate in different environments, including CircleCI's cloud and self-hosted runners, offering flexibility for projects with varying infrastructure and hardware requirements. This partnership marks the beginning of a broader initiative to develop more tools for the game development community while promoting efficient and scalable CI/CD practices.
