Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) is facilitating the expansion of liquid staking and restaking protocols by enabling users to stake Ethereum (ETH) directly from layer-2 networks, thus broadening the accessibility of liquid staking tokens (LSTs) and liquid restaking tokens (LRTs) across the multi-chain ecosystem. This is achieved through CCIP's support for Programmable Token Transfers, which allow simultaneous cross-chain transfer of tokens and data instructions. Lido, a leading liquid staking protocol, has integrated CCIP to enable users to stake ETH from other blockchain networks and receive wrapped staked ETH (wstETH), starting with support for Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism. This integration is being adopted by various decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, including XSwap, OpenOcean, and Interport. Additionally, other protocols like Diva, EigenPie, Frax, Gravita, Origin, and StakeStone are using CCIP to facilitate cross-chain staking and restaking of ETH. The CCIP enables complex cross-chain interactions without users needing to leave their preferred blockchain environment, supporting both a direct staking approach and a liquidity pool approach, each with its own benefits and challenges, thereby enhancing the scalability and functionality of staking protocols in the DeFi space.
